CHATTANOOGA
HOT SPRINGS, IDAHO

Chattanooga Hot Springs is located in the Boise National Forest.
This site has a large, sand-bottomed pool at the base of a thermal cascade amid
spectacular scenary. The springs are enjoyed by a
well established group of nude users.
DIRECTIONS: First, purchase a map of the Boise National Forest
from any ranger station and then from Boise
take Route 21 north for about 15 miles. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 268
and continue to Atlanta (NOT Georgia!),
about 35 miles. The hot springs
are located about a half mile past the Riverside Campground. Park
in the area at the top of the cliff.

Chattanooga Hot Springs
Chattanooga is one of many hot
springs found along the middle fork of the Boise River.
Road 268 is unpaved, yet well maintained and is accessable
to any automobile. It has many switchbacks along a lake, which eventually
becomes a river. The first hot pool is near the 35 mile mark, just across a
small bridge. It is up the hillside to the left. From this point there are
several hot springs
on both sides of the river. Atlanta
is 66 miles from the start of the road. This is a small town of 1868 vintage,
built of log buildings. I recommend a full tank of gasoline before this trip,
but there is a guy that sells it for $2 per gallon, pumping it from an above
ground tank. There are also two pay phones in this remote area, so have a
calling card or lots of change.
Proceed east out of Atlanta
1/2 mile into the Sawtooth
recreation area. On the right of the road is a large pond, the "Frog
Pond". This is fed by a hot spring in a mountain meadow,
that flows into a small pool. The pool empties into a stream that flows
into the Frog Pond. It is a nice place in its own right, but it isn't Chattanooga; you have
gone too far. Backtrack slightly to a small road that goes to the north, toward
the river. Park on the cliff, by the small ditch. If
you follow the trail down the bluff, you will see the pool at the base of it,
just 15 yards from the river. (convenient for keeping
your drinks cool) It is quite a sight. Hot water cascades off of the cliff and
replenishes this pool steadily. The view of the rugged mountains is
spectacular. You will have no doubts about it; the 2 1/2 hours of dusty road
was worth it. Be sure to pack in everything you need, and please leave it clean
when you go.
